The Outside Makes the Inside Makes the Outside by The Symbles
For fans of The Avalanches, Portishead, Ween, the online bedroom scene, and the process of making meaning of all of our most mundane memories, The Outside Makes the Inside Makes the Outside by The Symbles fights for dignity and recognition through an experimental yet surprisingly approachable plunderponic hip hop sound. A maximalist collage of samples dominates the composition, layered so densely as to become a fully tonal, melodic instrument which serves as the primary accompaniment of a deeply personal, highly present vocal. These vocals explore life as a plural system, a single physical body which houses multiple distinct and conscious beings, each with their own personalities, memories, names, identities, and everything else associated with individuality. While each of these beings strives for recognition by the outside world, the sum total system also struggles with achieving understanding and respect from others external to the body, a theme which resurfaces repeatedly through this record’s emotionally intense affirmations of personhood and importance. Here, the multiplicity of samples brings an entire mode of being into radiant, emotionally resonant focus.
