Shivering; by Octavia M Sheffner
What video came before this? What’s coming after? Am I sandwiched between a car crash and a thirst trap? Between your friend’s baby learning to walk and a clip of school children wasting your taxpayer dollars? Many of us spend hours a day in this state of induced digital psychosis, and the resulting brain activity sounds something like Shivering; by Octavia M Sheffner. Layers of found and produced sound compress into a single stream of consciousness, pulling together mundane youtube videos, traditional folk music, and euphoric free improvisation into a mass that at first feels incomprehensible. However, an invisible editor slowly draws these striations into harmony, forming an emotional narrative out of this arduous process of crafting order from chaos. By finding patterns in this aesthetic bombardment, we’ve fully internalized the psychosis of content capitalism, crafting meaning out of information as random and useless as television static, writing beautiful stories out of source material sparser than thin air.
