For fans of Black Midi, Cardiacs, Buffet Lunch, mathcore, and aesthetic maximalism as pure fun, Revocder by Cowboyy brings a genuine joy to the oftentimes stuffy atmosphere of progressive rock, simultaneously employing a diy self-awareness that keeps this record authentic and down-to-earth. Of course, extravagant guitar flourishes, wild drum grooves, and ridiculous song structures occur repeatedly across this EP, but that eye-rolling flashiness many of us have come to expect from prog rock still feels so distant from what we find here. Rather, the unapologetic weirdness of many of the compositional decisions made here, along with genuinely impassioned performances, proves this album’s status as a piece of true personal expression, the sort of direct outpouring of the subconscious which will never feel excessive. Instrumental eccentricities instead take on a whimsical role which furthers that self-exploration, a touch which flips the air of this entire project to one of emotionally pure and spiritually significant joy.
