For fans of Pink Floyd, Talk Talk, Neptunian Maximalism, slowcore, and the nagging feeling that there’s a higher level of consciousness just out of our reach, Drain by Vorhex Angel journeys through the mind as the physical world slowly deteriorates outside, our half-finished attempts at enlightenment increasingly worrying as reality nips at our heels. The abstract, experimental sounds of this record flow between aesthetics seamlessly, organically changing our setting from neoclassical ambiance to retro electronica to haunted chanting to folksy riffing as we search frantically for new routes to the sublime. However, through this whole process we experience a steadily rising musical tension, an intangible slant towards discordant drones and unsettling performances which show our quest falling apart in real time. At this meeting point between death anxiety and a longing for deeper modes of life, we find something so endearingly human as to instantly melt our hearts, sending us careening after the speaker on our own mad dash for eternity.
