For fans of Can, King Crimson, Cardiacs, that strain of both theatrical and delicate singer-songwriter, and community as the answer to an antagonistic world, Discombobulated by Hen Ogledd speaks in an unapologetically idiosyncratic voice to shake us from our atomized complacency. A varied sound with influences from progressive rock, contemporary jazz, traditional folk, and dance punk unifies under the authority of anthemic melodies, lending a singular artistic voice to this clearly collaborative effort. At times understated and pared-back, at others enormous and grandiose, these memorable melodies chart our progress through this emotional roller coaster, taking us from proud, celebratory highs to hushed, frightened lows. At all of these moments, our band shares one another’s company, always spontaneously intervening to support these team-effort motifs and exemplifying a communal dynamic in all emotional states. Whether or not our drive for community induces mass structural change, we see here the everyday light which these people bring into our lives, on the best of days, the worst of days, and everything in between.
