For fans of Pavement, Elliott Smith, Cuneiform Tabs, psychedelic folk, and the warm appreciation of all facets of life, The Use by Nic T crafts a cozy, fuzzy, homespun sound to meditate on human fragility and all that we have to give thanks for in our continued existence. A folk-based aesthetic enhanced with the complexity of progressive rock allows for the inclusion of instruments, chords, notes, and melodies which may at first sound out of place, destabilizing the record’s compositional core and setting us slightly on edge. However, we’re brought back into a state of serene comfort by the album’s subliminal sense of warmth, a feeling which radiates out of the lo-fi production practices and approachable vocal delivery to once again direct our attention towards opportunities for gratitude. By capturing the simultaneous awkwardness and glory of a life in an imperfect world, Nic T gives us the only type of comfort we can realistically expect, finding something less than ideal yet intimately relatable.
