For fans of Duster, Helvetia, Slint, bedroom emo, and the peaceful melancholy of a gray winter day spent indoors, sleep & glisten by Wino na tells a humble, intimate emotional tale in understated tones of whispers and twinkly riffing. Guitar arpeggios mostly focused around dissonant, suspended chords provide the melodic and harmonic basis for each track, establishing a core tension which only finds release through the track’s unexpectedly cozy atmosphere. Breathy, minimal vocals put us mere inches away from the songwriter, and the padded angles of guitar wrapped in layers of reverb and compression softens the blow of each suspended riff. Though depression pulls at us from below, our companionship with the artist in these tight quarters give us reason to breathe easy, given the assurance that we will always have a sympathetic voice in this fight. Sooner or later, we will need to leave this warm home to venture back out into the grayscale world outside, but even then we will carry with us the assurance that someone out there has walked exactly where we’re walking.
