Ressociation by Joybun
For fans of Cap’n Jazz, Mineral, Frail Body, first-wave emo, and that anxious middle section of the hero’s journey, Ressociation by Joybun begs for divine revelation while languishing in a sea of doubt. With the crushing weight of grief bearing down from above, our speaker fights back with post-hardcore intensity, documenting disillusionment through distorted power chord highs and spidery diary entry lows. Each peak provides a brilliant moment of narrative misdirection, suggesting an epiphany while instead providing only a clearer view of the same thick metaphysical fog as before, these moments of catharsis venting frustration rather than celebrating revelation. However, later moments on the record suggest a potential break in the clouds, a brief brush with the divine in the form of expanded acoustic segments and brighter chord progressions which point at an exit without revealing details of the world outside. We may not know whether this inkling of meaning will materialize into something actionable, but we at least can live with the satisfaction that our rabid journey has suggested a treasure worthy of our efforts.
