Psychic Sidekick by Rump State
For fans of This Heat, Daniel Johnston, Ramleh, proto punk, and the pathetic weakness of the human body, Psychic Sidekick by Rump State gives the impression of a semi-conscious bedridden emergency through a distinctly industrial and aesthetically absurd musical texture. Wildly warped samples and squelchy, sparse percussion forms the fundamental rhythms of the human body, anchoring the entire composition to essential functions like our breath and heartbeat. Everything else in the stereo field haunts us from just beyond our veil of understanding, with vocals only barely incomprehensible and chords only slightly out of our comfort zone barreling in from all directions. Our focus on mere survival opens us up to exterior chaos, the rhythms cracking and breaking as our body subliminally reacts to total environmental dissonance. Perhaps something lives inside us which sees nothing but this sort of horror at all times, crying out in anguish that something out there made you the person and it the suffering, half-conscious husk.
