Mud Again by Leather.Head
For fans of Maruja, Legss, Moss Icon, Midwest emo, and the Sisyphean effort to continue romanticizing every hopeless moment, Mud Again by Leather.Head presents a version of windmill scene post rock imbued with influences from across the history of emo. From the second this record roars to life, we know that these two sounds always belonged together. The anxiety of the windmill scene’s angular, suspended riffing matches perfectly with skramz-influenced moments of intense screamed vocals, while the melancholic counterbalance of the windmill signature saxophone dovetails perfectly with the smooth, twinkly riffing of Midwest emo. The end result produces a sound unbearably frustrated and crushingly neurotic, an evolution of late 20th century malaise into something acutely under threat and deathly anxious. As the world accelerates out from under our feet with every intention of leaving us behind, the conscious effort to stop our fruitless chasing results in this very sort of frantic depression as we’re left out in the cold, waiting for something to tell us what to do next.
