Corales EP by Corales
For fans of Saetia, Cime, math rock, and the metabolization of suffering into something meaningful, something worth experiencing, Corales EP by Corales shines a spotlight on the latent jazz influence hiding within emo to create a sound simultaneously warm, tender, and intense. That latent influence typically manifests as dark chord voicings and complex time signatures, both of which appear here in spades to set an atmosphere that pairs perfectly with the cyclical negativity of an anxiety attack. Taking things a step further, Corales invites jazz instrumentation along with distinctly jazzy riffs into their sound, a progression which conjures massive swings in intensity that make the emotions here feel all the more organic. Tempering the intensity of screamed vocals and distorted guitar with slick, swung horn lines gives every moment of the record an unexpectedly comfortable feeling, the sort of nostalgic tones which beckon us closer with open arms. When we go in for the embrace, we find a beautiful voice stricken with pain, encouraging us to harmonize as we call out from the haze of our own anguish.
