[angry noises] by Ciśnienie
For fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Maruja, contemporary experimental jazz, and the processing of childhood trauma into something stunningly beautiful, [angry noises] by Ciśnienie unleashes an explosive onslaught of post rock magic to rival the greatness of any traditional symphony. Prominent use of the saxophone, a tendency towards bluesy riffing, and of course plenty of complex, crunchy harmonies reveal this record’s deep ties to the jazz scene, regenerating the 2000s post rock sound as material for an experimental big band rather than a traditional rock band. In its determination to chase dynamic swells to absurd heights, however, Ciśnienie far outruns many bands of that original post rock era, constantly inventing new harmonic, rhythmic, and instrumental methods to continue the climb even after our imaginations have far run out of room to envision a higher peak. At first glance, this euphoric display feels like an odd response to deep-seeded childhood trauma, but a closer read reveals this record as a revenge fantasy, one where we find that precious, ever-elusive closure on the things which will haunt us for eternity.
