13 YC by 13 Year Cicada

For fans of Animal Collective, YHWH Nailgun, LA Timpa, glitch pop, and packing up and moving again before you even got done unpacking, 13 YC by 13 Year Cicada strives for stability in a world that demands constant, disruptive change, struggling to establish an interior peace which resists all the chaos in the exterior environment. A varied post electropop sound with heavy influences from industrial and psychedelic scenes tells this anxious story, with the cyclical nature of that electronic foundation mirroring a desperate mantra of self-talk to normalize an erratic subconscious. At moments, we get enough compositional space to see tranquility taking shape, with percussion hitting subtly and regularly while synth sounds remain recognizable and approachable, but these moments prove fleeting as we return to our anxious, alienating cycles. As younger generations experience turbulent job markets and a collapse in home ownership, this frightening feeling of alienation will only become more common, with our social consciousness increasingly struggling with those same spikes in anxiety which come from a lifetime of constant motion.
